6 Things Every First-Time AC Buyer in India Must Know
Most people buying their first AC make at least one expensive mistake. These 6 points will save you money on the purchase and every electricity bill after.
Always Choose 5-Star — Even in a Budget
The biggest mistake first-time AC buyers make is buying a 3-star to "save money". A 3-star at ₹27,000 will cost ₹3,000–₹4,000 more per year in electricity than a 5-star at ₹33,000. You'll recover the price difference in under 2 years — and save money every single year after. All 3 picks on this page are 5-star.
Inverter Technology Is Non-Negotiable
Non-inverter (fixed-speed) ACs are still sold in India in the ₹20K–₹28K range. They use 30–40% more electricity than inverter ACs. They also run louder and fail faster. Every AC under ₹35K in our list is an inverter AC. If you see a "non-inverter split AC" at a great price — walk away.
R-32 Refrigerant — Important for 2026
All 3 recommended models use R-32 refrigerant. It's more energy-efficient and environment-friendly (68% lower GWP than R-410A). More importantly, when it's time for a top-up, R-32 is cheaper and more widely available. Avoid any AC still using R-22 — it's being phased out and getting increasingly expensive to service.
Understand Convertible Mode — It's Actually Useful
All three picks have 5-in-1 convertible modes — you can run the AC at 40%, 60%, 80%, or 100% capacity. On mild spring days or cooler evenings, run at 40–60% and the electricity use drops sharply. This is a real feature that first-time buyers underestimate. On a 32°C day, 60% mode is completely comfortable and uses significantly less power.
Warranty — More Important Than You Think
Compressor failure is the most expensive AC repair — ₹8,000–₹18,000. The Carrier in our list has a 10-year compressor warranty, Voltas and Lloyd have 5 years. If you plan to use this AC for 8–10 years (which most people do), the warranty period matters enormously. Carrier's 10-year warranty makes its ₹2,000 premium very worthwhile.
The Real Total Cost: AC + Installation
Budget ₹5,000–₹8,000 extra for installation costs: labor (₹1,500–₹2,500), copper piping (₹2,500–₹4,200 for a 15-ft run), brackets (₹450–₹800), and a new electrical point if needed (₹600–₹1,400). Always use the brand's authorised installer — Voltas, Lloyd, and Carrier all provide installation through their service network. Don't let a local technician use aluminium pipe substitutes.
Common Mistake
Not Sure if 1-Ton or 1.5-Ton?
Buying the wrong tonnage is expensive. A 1-ton in a 180 sq ft room will run at 100% non-stop — wasting energy and straining the compressor. A 1.5-ton in a 90 sq ft room will short-cycle — also wasting energy and reducing dehumidification.

Some retailers sell 2022–2024 rated ACs with old 5-star labels at deep discounts. Always check: ISEER on the label must be ≥ 4.50 for current 5-star. If it shows less, it's an older rated model being cleared at a price that seems too good.
