How Your Bill is Calculated: Fixed Charges, Surcharges, and Slabs
Most people don't know that crossing a slab boundary reprices ALL your units — not just the extra ones.
Fixed Charges
A flat monthly fee (₹40–₹130) regardless of consumption. Covers meter rent and distribution infrastructure. Cannot be reduced by using less electricity.
Slab-Based Energy Charges
The first X units are cheap, the next Y units are more expensive. Critically, in most states, crossing a slab reprices ALL units — not just the extra ones above the threshold.
Surcharges & Taxes
FPPCA (fuel adjustment), regulatory surcharge (5–8%), and electricity duty are added on top of energy charges. These can add ₹0.50–₹1.50/unit to your effective rate.
Slab Cheat Sheet: Major Metro Rates
How your bill is calculated in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai — with AC impact analysis.
A 1.5T 5-star AC (8h/day) adds ~180 units. Most Delhi homes cross 400 units in summer.
Mumbai's high slab at ₹12.40/unit is among India's most expensive. AC users easily cross 300 units.
Bangalore's mild climate means fewer AC hours, but the ₹8.35–9.50 upper slabs still sting heavy users.
Chennai has India's most generous subsidy. Even heavy AC users rarely pay more than ₹3.50–4.60/unit.

Everything you need to know about your electricity bill
In summer, your AC runs longer and harder to fight the heat. A 1.5T AC that runs 6h/day in winter might run 10–12h/day in summer — nearly doubling its electricity consumption. Additionally, higher total units push you into more expensive slabs, meaning ALL your units get repriced at the higher rate, not just the extra ones.
