DIY Filter Cleaning: Step-by-Step

The single most impactful maintenance task you can do yourself

1

Power Off the ACImportant

Turn off the AC from the remote and switch off the dedicated MCB. Never open the unit with power on.

2

Open the Front Panel

Lift the front panel upward — most split ACs have a hinge at the top. It should click open without force.

3

Slide Out the Filter

The filter slides out horizontally. Hold it flat to avoid spilling dust. Note the direction for reinsertion.

4

Tap Out Loose Dust

Gently tap the filter over a bin to dislodge loose dust. Do this outdoors if possible.

5

Rinse Under Running Water

Use lukewarm water — no soap needed for light cleaning. For heavy grime, use a mild detergent and a soft brush.

6

Dry CompletelyImportant

Shake off excess water and air-dry in shade for 30–60 minutes. Never reinsert a wet filter — it causes mold.

7

Reinsert and Power On

Slide the filter back in the correct orientation, close the panel, and restore power. Run for 5 minutes to verify airflow.

AC Filter Cleaning

Why It Matters

A clogged filter increases power consumption by 10–15%
Restricted airflow reduces cooling capacity by up to 25%
Dirty filters breed bacteria and mold — affecting air quality
Regular cleaning extends compressor life by 2–3 years

Why Your AC Smells: Causes & Fixes

Decode every odor before it becomes a bigger problem

Musty / Mold Smell

Medium

Cause: Mold on evaporator coil or filter

Fix: Clean filter + coil spray. Run fan-only mode after each session.

Burning / Plastic Smell

Critical

Cause: Electrical fault, overheating capacitor or wiring

Fix: Switch off immediately. Call a technician — do not ignore.

Sweet / Chemical Smell

Critical

Cause: Refrigerant leak (R32 or R410A)

Fix: Ventilate room, switch off AC, call technician. Refrigerant is harmful.

Rotten Eggs Smell

High

Cause: Dead insects or rodents inside the unit

Fix: Professional cleaning required. Check outdoor unit for entry points.

Mild Plastic (New AC) Smell

Normal

Cause: Manufacturing residues burning off

Fix: Normal for first 2–3 uses. Ventilate the room. Disappears on its own.

Gas Pressure & Coil Cleaning

The two jobs only a technician should handle

Refrigerant Gas Check

Low refrigerant is the #1 cause of poor cooling in ACs older than 3 years. Signs: AC runs but room doesn't cool, ice forming on pipes, hissing sound near outdoor unit.

  • Only a certified technician can check gas pressure safely
  • R32 gas refill costs ₹2,000–₹4,000
  • A proper refill should last 3–5 years
  • Frequent top-ups = there's a leak that needs fixing

Professional Jet Wash

A professional jet wash uses high-pressure water to deep-clean the evaporator coil, removing mold, dust, and biofilm that a filter clean can't reach. Do this every pre-summer.

  • Restores 90–95% of original cooling efficiency
  • Eliminates musty smells permanently
  • Costs ₹500–₹1,500 per service
  • Takes 45–60 minutes by a trained technician
Professional AC Coil Cleaning

Seasonal Maintenance Reminders

The three critical windows every Indian AC owner must know

Pre-Summer (March–April)

  • Book professional jet wash
  • Check refrigerant pressure
  • Clean all filters
  • Inspect outdoor unit clearance
  • Test all modes (Cool, Fan, Dry)

Pro tip: Book your technician in February — slots fill up fast before summer.

Post-Monsoon (October)

  • Clean mold from evaporator coil
  • Clear drain pipe of monsoon debris
  • Check for rust on outdoor unit
  • Inspect electrical connections for moisture
  • Run AC for 30 min to dry internals

Pro tip: Monsoon humidity causes mold buildup. A post-monsoon clean prevents musty smells all winter.

Pre-Winter Shutdown (November)

  • Run fan-only mode for 1 hour to dry coil
  • Clean and dry filter before storage
  • Cover outdoor unit with a breathable cover
  • Note any issues for pre-summer service
  • Check warranty expiry dates

Pro tip: Covering the outdoor unit prevents dust accumulation and protects fins during the off-season.

Regional Care: Coastal Salt Air vs. Desert Dust vs. Urban Pollution

Your climate zone determines your maintenance frequency. One size does not fit all.

Coastal Salt Air

Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Visakhapatnam, Goa

Monthly inspection

Key Threats

Salt corrosion on fins
Accelerated rust on outdoor unit
Copper pipe oxidation

Recommended Actions

Apply anti-corrosion fin spray every 6 months
Use Gold Fin or Ocean Black coated units
Cover outdoor unit during monsoon
Inspect fins monthly for rust spots

Desert / Dry Heat

Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Jodhpur, Nagpur

Weekly filter clean

Key Threats

Heavy dust clogging filters weekly
High ambient temp (45°C+) stressing compressor
Sand particles in outdoor unit

Recommended Actions

Clean filter every 7–10 days in summer
Shade outdoor unit from direct afternoon sun
Check refrigerant pressure before May
Install dust-proof mesh on outdoor unit

Tropical / High Humidity

Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Guwahati

Monthly drain flush

Key Threats

Mold growth on evaporator coil
Drain pipe blockage from algae
Condensation on walls near unit

Recommended Actions

Run fan-only mode 30 min after each session
Flush drain pipe with bleach monthly
Use dehumidifier mode (Dry mode) regularly
Apply anti-mold coil spray quarterly

Urban Pollution

Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad

10-day filter cycle

Key Threats

PM 2.5 clogging filters rapidly
Carbon deposits on coil
Reduced air quality output

Recommended Actions

Clean filter every 10 days in winter (smog season)
Upgrade to HEPA or PM 2.5 filter if available
Professional coil cleaning every 4 months
Check air purification mode settings
