Best AC Float Switch &
Overflow Sensor India 2026

A ₹800 float switch wired into your drain pan cuts power the instant water rises — before it hits your ceiling. Without one, your AC runs silently while litres of condensate pool overhead. This guide explains SS2, SS3, SS1 types, Indian brand wiring, and the E4/EC error code most people misdiagnose.

SS2 HVAC Float Switch — Drain Outlet Mount

SS2 Type · 3/4" Adapter · NC Reed Switch · 6-Foot Wire · Screws into Pan Outlet

~₹1,899

Single unit — fits most split AC drain pans

4.4(520+ reviews)

Type

SS2 — Outlet Mount

Adapter

3/4" NPT Thread

Switch Logic

NC (Normally Closed)

Wire Length

6 Feet (1.8M)

Pros

  • Screws directly into the 3/4" threaded drain outlet on most Indian split AC drain pans — zero drilling
  • Magnetic reed switch (not mechanical float) — never sticks, never corrodes, no moving parts to fail
  • NC (Normally Closed) logic: circuit breaks and AC shuts down the instant water reaches the sensor
  • Most commonly installed type by professional AC technicians in India — well-documented wiring
  • Compatible with all major Indian brands: LG, Samsung, Daikin, Voltas, Blue Star, Hitachi
  • 6-foot wire gives enough reach to the thermostat control board without extension

Cons

  • Requires a threaded 3/4" outlet port on the drain pan — doesn't work if your pan has no outlet port
  • Wiring into the control board is required — not suitable for those uncomfortable with electrical work

Verdict: The gold standard for Indian residential split ACs. If your drain pan has a 3/4" threaded outlet — and most do — the SS2 is the cleanest, most reliable fit. This is what a service engineer will install.

SS Bracket, No Drilling

Best For

Auxiliary / Emergency Pan

Pros

  • Clips onto the edge of any drain pan — no threaded outlet port required
  • Stainless steel bracket is rust-proof and holds the sensor at the correct water-level height
  • Purpose-built for secondary or emergency overflow pans where there is no drain outlet to screw into
  • Ideal for retrofitting into existing drain pans that were never sold with a sensor port
  • Magnetic reed switch — same reliability as the SS2 with no mechanical float to jam

Cons

  • Pan edge mount means slight water-level sensing delay vs the outlet-mount SS2
  • Bracket positioning requires care — if mounted too high, overflow won't be detected until significant water accumulates

Verdict: The right choice when your drain pan has no 3/4" outlet port or you're adding protection to a secondary/emergency pan. The SS3 and SS2 are often used together for dual-layer protection on commercial units.

NC Float Actuated

Best For

Wall-Embedded Drain Pan

Pros

  • Installs inline in the drain pipe itself — no need to access the drain pan at all
  • Critical for split AC units where the drain pan is fully enclosed inside the wall unit casing
  • Standard T-shape tee fits directly onto 16mm or 19mm PVC drain pipes used in most Indian ACs
  • Float activates when condensate backs up in the line — shuts AC before pan overflow occurs
  • Easier to inspect and replace than a pan-mounted switch since the drain pipe is accessible

Cons

  • Float mechanism (vs magnetic reed) has slightly higher long-term maintenance needs
  • Inline position means slightly delayed response vs a direct pan sensor
  • Requires cutting the drain pipe to install the T-fitting — not a tool-free job

Verdict: The only option when you cannot access the drain pan directly. If your AC indoor unit is fully enclosed in a false ceiling or the drain pan is internal to the casing, the SS1 is your only DIY-viable route.

Inlet Grill Included

Best For

Cassette / AHU / Central

Certification

UL / CE Listed

Pros

  • Probe with inlet grill actively prevents debris from blocking the sensor — critical for dusty Indian environments
  • Capacitive detection (no mechanical float) = zero wear, zero sticking, rated for 10+ year service life
  • UL/CE listed — required for commercial buildings, hospitals, data centres
  • Works across 24V and 240V systems — compatible with central AHUs and cassette units
  • Most reliable option where sensor failure itself would cause undetected overflow (high-stakes ceilings)

Cons

  • Price at ₹2,800–₹5,500 is 3–6× the cost of a standard SS2
  • Import-only availability — longer lead time and no local warranty centre
  • Significant overkill for a standard 1.5T residential split AC

Verdict: The definitive choice for cassette ACs in false ceilings, commercial premises, server rooms, or any installation where sensor failure is not an option. The debris-guarded probe survives Indian dust and humidity for a decade without service.

Reed vs Float vs Capacitive

Magnetic reed switches (SS2/SS3) have no moving parts — they last 5–8 years without maintenance. Mechanical floats (SS1) can stick with scale or algae after 2–3 years. Capacitive probes (CC-1) never wear out but cost 3× more.

NC = Fail-Safe Logic

All quality float switches use Normally Closed (NC) logic. This means if the switch wire breaks or the sensor fails, the circuit opens and the AC shuts off — preventing overflow even from sensor failure itself. Never buy a NO (Normally Open) switch for water protection.

SS2 + SS3 Dual Install

Professional installers often wire both SS2 (primary pan) and SS3 (secondary/emergency pan) in series. If either pan overflows, the AC shuts down. Cost under ₹3,600 total — the best insurance for any AC above a finished ceiling.

Deep Dive

The Complete Float Switch Buyer's Guide

How it works, wiring for Indian ACs, E4/EC error decoder, when you actually need one, and annual maintenance checks.

A float switch is one of the simplest protection devices in HVAC. Here is exactly what happens:

Normal Operation (Dry Pan)

The drain pan is empty or has only a thin film of water. The float sits at the bottom. A magnet on the float keeps the internal reed switch closed. The circuit is complete. The AC runs normally.

Overflow Detected (Wet Pan)

Water rises in the pan (blocked drain or cracked pipe). The float rises with it. The magnet moves away from the reed switch. The circuit OPENS. The AC control board detects the broken circuit and shuts down the compressor and/or fan.

Why NC (Normally Closed) is mandatory for safety:

NC logic means the circuit is closed during normal (safe) operation and opens to trigger shutdown. This is fail-safe: if the wire breaks, the sensor corrodes, or power is lost — the circuit opens and the AC stops. A NO (Normally Open) sensor would allow the AC to run even if the sensor itself failed, which is the opposite of protection.
